CASH of the ‘Titans’!

April 6th, 2010

It looks like 3-D has worked its money magic once again: although dismissed by critics as ‘Trash of the Titans,’ the latest 3-D release, “Clash of the Titans,” cleaned up at the box office over Easter weekend, pulling in more than twice its nearest competitor’s total. At $61.4 million, the 3-D remake of the 1981 cheeseball classic set a record for box office take over the holiday ‘frame,’ as they say in “Daily Variety.” The number 2 film, “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?” pulled in $30.2 million, followed very closely by Paramount’s 3-D “How to Train Your Dragon,” which is quickly tooling its way to $100 million domestic gross; ‘Dragon’ brought in $29.2 million.

The Miley Cyrus-starring “The Last Song” opened in 4th place, but with a decent $16.2 million. Last week’s #1 film, “Hot Tub Time Machine,” slipped under the surface, dropping 43% to $8 million. It represented MGM’s best chance at a mini-revival (at least at the box office), but that seems to have submerged as well; the Lion announced yesterday that Sony will take over domestic distribution of this fall’s Kevin James-starrer “The Zookeeper,” which is scheduled to be released October 8th. In the absence of some extraordinary rescue, it looks like Leo the Lion is headed for pasture… or veldt, or wherever unemployed lions end up.
